Look Up.

I heard a story the other day about a couple who was moving out of their apartment.. The couple had finally gotten to moving their mattress when all of a sudden they looked up and saw a child dangling from a window in their apartment complex, about to fall to it’s death. They quickly rushed over to help and magically were able to catch the child on their box spring mattress! This is a true story, and while it is very lucky that they were in the right place at the right time with a mattress, this story gave me inspiration to write about something else.

Our days are filled with mundane tasks where we can get so focused on the thing right in front of us. Unfortunately we are sometimes so intent on the item first on our docket, we fail to look up and see what is really happening in the courtyard around us.  We are so quick to forget the impact of the simple things that occur every day. We are also so very quick to forget to serve when we feel bogged down with our own tasks that nag at us all day.  Some of the best advice I have gotten during this stage of my life is to make sure that I am “looking up” and seeing where I can serve and help others.

Yes, our daily struggles are important and in order to accomplish our goals, we have to be a little selfish sometimes, but maybe there is power through our service of others. Maybe we can figure out our strongest selves by looking up and seeing what others need, instead of only looking at what we need.

“At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done.
We will be judged by "I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”
― Mother Teresa

With the mention of my difficulties of being overwhelmed a few weeks ago, I have since been working on taking the time to “look up” and see the needs of those around me. Which prompts me to ask... Who are you feeding? Who are you clothing? Who are you taking in? How are you loving and serving those around you? These are questions I ask myself regularly. Don’t feel like you need to be Mother Teresa, simply remember that your mundane moving day could potentially change a life, maybe even two including yours!
